It\u2019s not about the specific funds used in a single transaction (which is known as source of funds) but the bigger picture:\u00a0how did this person or business come to have the wealth they hold today?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FATF Recommendation 10 sets the international due diligence standard and requires you to establish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amlcc.com\/whats-source-of-funds\/\">source of funds<\/a>\u00a0where necessary.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fatf-gafi.org\/en\/publications\/Fatfrecommendations\/Peps-r12-r22.html\">FATF Recommendation 12<\/a>\u00a0then calls for you to establish source of wealth as well, in higher-risk situations. These findings should be backed up with appropriate evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What source of wealth means in each sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each regulated sector applies the same underlying principle: source of wealth is the origin of a client&#8217;s total assets. What changes from sector to sector is when and how deep you&#8217;re expected to go to establish it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Accountancy sector<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to establish source of funds for all transactions and source of wealth as well when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amlcc.com\/what-is-enhanced-due-diligence\/\">enhanced due diligence<\/a>\u00a0applies;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the client&#8217;s financial position doesn&#8217;t match their profile;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ownership structures are opaque;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>transactions appear unusually large or complex.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Legal sector\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Source of wealth refers to the origin of a client&#8217;s entire body of wealth: the economic, business and commercial activities that generated their overall net worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to establish source of funds for the transactions or activities within the business relationship, and source of wealth as well in situations such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>all\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amlcc.com\/whats-a-pep\/\">PEP<\/a>\u00a0relationships;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cross-border or sanctions-linked matters;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>high-value or unusual property transactions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>complex trust or company structures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All this work needs to be supported by the relevant documentation. The depth of your checks should be driven by the risk assessment for the client and the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trust and company service providers (TCSPs)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re expected to establish source of wealth when acting for the settlors, beneficial owners or controlling parties behind a trust or company structure. This becomes particularly important in situations such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>beneficial owners or controlling parties who are PEPs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>complex or opaque beneficial ownership chains;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>high-value trusts or company structures with no clear commercial rationale;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wealth that appears disproportionate to the client&#8217;s known background;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>structures spanning multiple jurisdictions with limited transparency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Property sector<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Source of wealth means the origin of a client&#8217;s overall wealth. You need to establish this in cases involving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PEPs and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amlcc.com\/whats-a-high-risk-jurisdiction-2\/\">high-risk jurisdictions<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>high-value purchases;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>offshore buyers or corporate purchasers;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clients whose background doesn&#8217;t match their financial position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Establishing a client&#8217;s financial background is central to checking that a property transaction lines up with their profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dealers in precious metals and stones\u00a0(also known as high-value dealers or HVDs)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to understand both the source of funds and the wider source of wealth when risk indicators appear.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because cash-heavy sectors carry a higher exposure to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amlcc.com\/what-is-money-laundering\/\">money laundering<\/a>, you should be able to demonstrate that a client&#8217;s financial background makes sense relative to the transaction, including when there are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>large cash purchases with no clear explanation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>customers whose occupation or circumstances don&#8217;t align with the value of the goods;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>repeated high-value cash transactions over a short period;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>buyers linked to high-risk jurisdictions or industries;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>customers unwilling to explain how they accumulated their wealth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you can&#8217;t establish source of wealth, or when the explanation contradicts what you know about the customer, this is a clear trigger for enhanced due diligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What credible source of wealth information looks like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The explanation of source of wealth must be credible and proportionate to risk. Regulators give examples such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;long-term employment or professional income;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;profits from a legitimate business;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;inheritance (with probate documents where appropriate);<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;sale of property or other assets;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;long-term investments;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;pension income or retirement assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your test is whether the explanation reasonably accounts for the client\u2019s wealth and is consistent with what you know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Red flags to watch for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FATF guidance sets out the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fatf-gafi.org\/en\/publications\/Fatfrecommendations\/Peps-r12-r22.html\">red flag indicators<\/a>&nbsp;used across the industry to spot potential misuse of the financial system. For source of wealth, the ones that come up consistently include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>wealth that doesn&#8217;t match the client&#8217;s known background;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>explanations relying on vague phrases such as &#8220;family money&#8221; or &#8220;various investments&#8221;;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wealth linked to high-risk jurisdictions without evidence;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reluctance to explain or discuss financial background.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where this occurs, enhanced due diligence may be required or you may need to consider whether the relationship can proceed safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding source of wealth helps you test whether a client&#8217;s financial story is coherent and legitimate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A clear explanation, backed by proportionate evidence, helps you assess risk and confirm it&#8217;s consistent with what you already know about the client.
